The CBI has decided to move the Supreme Court against the order of Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, IP Mukerji, exonerating Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and two other former education officials regarding the education scam case. The CBI had filed the chargesheet against the trio, and the trial has been going on. “We are shocked about the verdict, we will be challenging the order in the Supreme Court, said an official source dealing with the CBI matter.
“It’s not about adding too many witnesses. The charge sheet was filed after collecting concrete evidence. If there was no evidence, then charges could not be framed. There was concrete evidence against the trio; hence, they were charge sheeted, the source added. The special leave petition to be filed by the CBI will focus on why the court didn’t even call for records from the trial court to peruse. It was the high court that had asked the CBI to investigate, and the same court has quashed the FIR, said the source.
Earlier, during the press conference, the Advocate for Ampareen Sanjita Ain said via video conference that her client is ready to respond to the challenge, if any, in the Supreme Court. When asked about the fate of over 200 candidates who were declared ‘tainted’ following the education scam case, the advocate said the case is limited to the three persons, including Ampareen. The order comes at a time when the chief justice is retiring on September 5.
