Senior RSS functionary and BJP leader Sunil Deodhar has expressed regret following widespread backlash over remarks he made at the Indigenous Faith Conference held on February 16 in Pynter village, Pynursla Subdivision of Meghalaya.
In a letter addressed to BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna, Deodhar clarified that he holds “immense respect for Lord Jesus Christ” and deep affection for the Christian community. He stated that his comments were made within the specific context of the conference and were not intended to criticize Christianity or hurt religious sentiments.
“I sincerely regret if any of my words have been perceived as disrespectful or have caused pain,” he said, reiterating his commitment to communal harmony and inclusivity. He also noted that during his tenure as National Convener of the BJP’s North East India Sampark Cell, Christmas celebrations were organized for Christian youth, including one held at the residence of Lal Krishna Advani.
At the same time, Deodhar defended his right to raise concerns about indigenous faith communities such as Niam Khasi and Niam Tre, arguing that highlighting developmental disparities should not be interpreted as hostility toward any religion.
However, the controversy sparked strong reactions across the state. The National People’s Party (NPP) condemned his remarks as divisive and inflammatory. Party spokesperson HM Shangpliang described the allegations against the state government as factually incorrect and accused Deodhar of attempting to incite division. The NPP demanded accountability and reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Meghalaya’s tradition of tolerance and social harmony.
Members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) staged protests outside the state BJP office, burning an effigy of Deodhar and calling for an unconditional public apology. HYC leaders alleged that the remarks could mislead the public and disrupt peaceful coexistence.
Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Meghalaya unit lodged an FIR at Sadar Police Station, accusing Deodhar of making baseless and inflammatory claims that could provoke communal discord. The complaint urged action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The episode has intensified political tensions in Meghalaya, with calls for restraint and responsible public discourse gaining momentum amid concerns over maintaining communal peace.
