A powerful storm accompanied by heavy rainfall has caused extensive destruction in the Ri-Bhoi district, impacting thousands of residents and leaving significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to officials, the storm struck late Monday night, severely affecting villages under the Umling and Jirang blocks. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed that at least 1,028 houses have been damaged, while more than 5,000 people have been affected by the calamity.
The intensity of the storm uprooted trees, damaged rooftops, and disrupted essential services. Several areas reported power outages, further complicating the situation for residents already dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
Authorities indicated that the scale of destruction could rise, as reports from some remote areas are still awaited. Initial assessments suggest that many families have been left without proper shelter, with both kutcha and pucca houses sustaining varying degrees of damage.
In response, the district administration has launched relief operations on a priority basis. Essential supplies, including food items, tarpaulins, and warm clothing, are being distributed among affected families. Efforts are also underway to restore electricity and clear debris from roads to ensure connectivity.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local agencies to expedite damage assessment and rehabilitation measures.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of the region to sudden extreme weather events, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain cautious and prepared as unstable weather conditions continue in parts of the Northeast.
