South West Garo Hills celebrates Women’s Day with focus on equality and empowerment

South West Garo Hills in Meghalaya marked International Women’s Day with a special programme aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. The event, held at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati, brought together government officials, healthcare workers, and community leaders under the theme “Accelerate Action – Moving Towards Gender Equality.” Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, IAS, who served as the Chief Guest, emphasized both progress and ongoing challenges for women in Meghalaya. While highlighting the state’s strong female workforce participation and literacy rates, she pointed out that economic struggles persist even for women in traditional leadership roles.

“Even female nokmas who hold land rights often struggle financially,” Nayak remarked, stressing the need for economic empowerment alongside legal rights.

The event featured:

–  Talks on gender-based violence by TD Ch Marak, LCPO, DCPU, and women’s safety discussions by Additional SP SN Marak.

–  Recognition of outstanding women, including Lastmania T Sangma, a Beti Bachao Beti Padhao ambassador with 17 Taekwondo medals, and healthcare workers from Gopinathkilla and Rongsangabagre Sub Centres.

–  Cultural performances and competitions, with Japang VO winning the tug-of-war contest.

DC Nayak participated in free health screenings and urged women to prioritize their well-being. The event also provided a marketplace for women entrepreneurs, offering them economic opportunities.
