Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district celebrated International Women’s Day with a full program centered on women’s empowerment and gender equality. The event, which took place at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati, united community people, medical professionals, and local politicians under the subject “Accelerate Action – Moving Towards Gender Equality.” The Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, IAS, emphasized the region’s women’s development as well as ongoing struggles.
Nayak voiced concern regarding women in traditional leadership roles who still experience economic challenges despite their legal authority, despite pointing out Meghalaya’s high literacy rates and female employment involvement within its matrilineal community. A presentation on gender-based violence by TD Ch Marak, LCPO, DCPU, and a discussion on women’s protection by Additional Superintendent of Police SN Marak were among the educational sessions on important topics that were part of the event.
A ceremony honored women, including Lastmania T Sangma, Brand Ambassador for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and healthcare workers, with cultural performances and competitive activities, including a tug-of-war competition. Assam Rifles personnel will issue border passes, requiring state governments to deploy police and health officials at entry and exit points. Rio emphasized the importance of humanitarian concerns for Naga communities, who depend on cross-border travel for farming, education, and medical care. An all-party delegation to meet Amit Shah is proposed.
