A young woman in Shillong has admitted to fabricating a robbery complaint, police confirmed on Thursday. The false claim, which alleged that she was robbed at knifepoint by four men, had earlier created panic across the city.
Investigators revealed that the story, which quickly spread on social media and sparked concern among residents, was entirely untrue. The woman confessed that she had actually given the money to a friend for an online purchase and, fearing repercussions, concocted the robbery narrative.
The complaint had initially been registered at Rynjah Police Station. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that a final report in the case will soon be filed and reminded the public that providing false information to law enforcement authorities is a punishable offence.
