In a major step to ease chronic traffic congestion near the Addl. Secretariat, Shillong, Shillong Smart City Limited (SSCL) has announced a Mechanised Multilevel Car Park on Vivekananda Road, aimed at transforming parking management in one of the city’s busiest corridors. Built at a cost of ₹6.5 crore under the DBOT (Design, Build, Operate, Maintain & Transfer) model, the facility will feature an eight-level automated structure on a compact 630 sq. metre site, accommodating 58 vehicles through a “1 stationary, 7 moving” vertical stacking system. Each slot can support up to 2,300 kg, suitable for SUVs and sedans, with vehicle retrieval in around two minutes.
An SSCL official said the project reflects the city’s push toward smart infrastructure. “Given Shillong’s limited road space, vertical parking is no longer an option but a necessity. This mechanised facility will significantly reduce roadside parking and improve traffic flow near the Secretariat area,” the official stated. The project integrates 2KW rooftop solar panels, along with DG and UPS backup for uninterrupted operations. Commuters will be able to book parking slots via a mobile app, website, or on-site, while safety features include CCTV surveillance, a public address system, and a 45,000-litre fire-fighting system.
Inclusive washroom facilities for ladies, gents, and persons with disabilities have also been planned. Emphasising affordability, another official added, “Parking charges will be very nominal so that the facility remains accessible to all and encourages people to shift away from roadside parking.” With a five-year O&M period , the project is being seen as a model for future vertical parking solutions across Shillong.
