Saleng A. Sangma Raises Alarm Over Border Threats, Seeks Action

Lok Sabha MP Saleng A. Sangma from Tura has expressed grave concerns about the alleged threats in border regions and the increasing issue of illegal immigration, framing it as a matter of national security rather than solely a state issue. He referenced reports of intimidating posters in the Garo Hills, which warned local residents to evacuate border areas or face violence. This has instilled fear and anger among the population, leading Sangma to assert that such threats cannot merely be dismissed.

The psychological impact is significant, with fears among residents growing into broader social anxieties. Sangma observed that the influx of people is on the rise not only in Meghalaya but also in neighboring Assam, prompting a call for urgent and coordinated action. He argued that existing state regulations, including the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, might be inadequate given the severity of the situation. Therefore, he advocated for stronger mechanisms to monitor and control immigration effectively.

Cultural implications were also highlighted, with Sangma warning that unchecked immigration might challenge local communities, as new arrivals may fail to assimilate into the established social and cultural frameworks, potentially resulting in future tensions. He underscored the centrality of land to the identity, economy, and lifestyle of the people, emphasizing its protection.

Additionally, Sangma reported that he has written to the Government of India, requesting the deployment of sufficient security forces in sensitive border areas to mitigate infiltration. He specified locations such as Batabari, Chibinang, and Tikrikilla, along with other stretches of the India-Bangladesh border, as areas necessitating increased vigilance to ensure security and stability.
