Probe Launched Into Mysterious Death of NEHU Security Guard

The East Khasi Hills Police have launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Bipul Inghi, a security guard employed at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who reportedly died following an incident on the university campus earlier this month. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Monday that the police received information about the incident a few days after Inghi’s death, both from the Ri-Bhoi Police and the deceased’s family members. An FIR has since been lodged by the family at Mawlai Police Station. According to the police, Inghi allegedly sustained injuries after a fall inside the NEHU campus at around 7:30 pm on January 6. He was later taken to Supercare Hospital in Shillong, where he succumbed to his injuries on January 8. Syiem stated that the case has been registered as an unnatural death. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report from Ri-Bhoi district. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain what exactly happened on the night of January 6 inside the NEHU campus,” he said.

He added that the probe is being conducted by the Mawkynroh Police Outpost and that a decision on whether to reclassify the case as murder will be taken after the post-mortem report and further findings of the investigation. The East Khasi Hills Police have also written to the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi district, seeking the post-mortem report. Earlier, the family of the deceased raised concerns after noticing injury marks and blood clots on Inghi’s body when it was brought home, triggering suspicions over the circumstances of his death. However, family members clarified that they do not have direct suspicion against any individual, including the hospital staff who treated him.The family has appealed for a fair and thorough investigation, seeking clarity on whether Inghi’s death was the result of an accidental fall or foul play.
