
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended warm birthday greetings to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, praising his efforts to work for the people and the overall development of the hill state.In a message shared on social media platform X on January 27, the Prime Minister appreciated the chief minister’s work and dedication. “Birthday wishes to Meghalaya Chief Minister Shri Conrad Sangma Ji. His efforts to fulfil the aspirations of Meghalaya’s people are noteworthy. I pray for his long life and good health,” the Prime Minister said in his post. Chief Minister Sangma responded to the message by expressing his gratitude to the Prime Minister. Quoting the post, he wrote, “Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister, @narendramodi ji for your blessings. May God bless you.” The exchange drew attention online and was widely shared by party workers and supporters across the state.
Apart from the Prime Minister, several chief ministers and political leaders from different states also sent their birthday wishes to the Meghalaya chief minister. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wished Sangma a long life and good health. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Sangma’s leadership, stating that under his guidance Meghalaya was making steady progress and moving towards prosperity. Sarma also prayed for Sangma’s good health and continued service to the people. The birthday greetings from senior leaders highlighted Conrad Sangma’s growing standing at the national level and his role in leading Meghalaya for a second consecutive term. Sangma, who is also the president of the National People’s Party (NPP), was sworn in again as chief minister in March 2023 after his party emerged as the single largest force in the Meghalaya Assembly elections.
In the 2023 elections, the NPP won 26 seats in the 60-member Assembly and went on to form the government with the support of its alliance partners. The coalition government secured the backing of 45 MLAs, including two from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar were sworn in as deputy chief ministers in the new government.Conrad Sangma represents the South Tura constituency in the state Assembly. He retained the seat with a margin of 5,016 votes, defeating BJP candidate Bernard N Marak, according to official data released by the Election Commission of India. Since assuming office, Sangma has focused on development programmes, infrastructure growth, youth welfare and strengthening the state’s economy. The Prime Minister’s birthday message and the greetings from other leaders were seen as a recognition of his efforts and his role in shaping Meghalaya’s development path.
