The rise of social-selling platforms is opening new entrepreneurial avenues across India, with stories like that of Meghalaya’s Nidaiohi Biam highlighting the growing appeal of flexible, network-driven business models. Hailing from a remote village in Meghalaya, Biam grew up in a large family with four sisters and five brothers under economically challenging circumstances. Determined to pursue education while supporting her household, she began working early in life and contributed to her family’s income while still attending school.
Her first professional role came as a helper in an IT shop in Jowai, where she gained initial work experience. Looking to broaden her exposure, she stepped outside her hometown to acquire new skills and perspectives. However, recognising the importance of education for long-term stability, she later returned home to continue her studies, convinced that perseverance and continuous learning would create better opportunities.
Today, Biam has achieved financial independence and gained recognition for her achievements. She now mentors aspiring entrepreneurs within her community, supporting many women in taking their first steps toward financial self-reliance and network-based business opportunities.
Shillong has seen increasing interest in direct-selling and social-selling platforms, particularly among young professionals and women seeking flexible income streams. Industry observers note that entrepreneurial success stories emerging from Meghalaya are helping drive awareness and participation in such platforms, strengthening the region’s growing network-led micro-entrepreneurship ecosystem.
