New Shillong goes green as Meghalaya launches Rs 2.5-crore tree plantation drive

The Meghalaya government has started a large tree plantation programme in New Shillong Township with the aim of making the city greener, cooler and less polluted as it develops into a major urban centre. Under this project, the state plans to plant around 6,000 trees along more than 25 kilometres of roads and about 2 kilometres of road medians. The government has set aside ₹2.5 crore for the project, which will be carried out over the next five years. Officials said the work began in 2025 and will continue in phases. One of the main stretches covered under the drive is the Ummir Junction to Mawkhanur road.

Along this route, the target is to plant nearly 10,000 plants, of which 6,340 saplings have already been planted along a proposed road length of 16.56 kilometres. The remaining plantation work will be completed gradually. Government officials said the project is not just for decoration but is part of a long-term plan to protect the environment while the city grows. According to official documents, the trees are expected to help reduce air pollution, lower rising temperatures, control soil erosion and improve road safety. The plantations are also expected to make roads more pleasant for daily travel.

Native and pollution-tolerant tree species suited to Meghalaya’s climate are being given priority. These plants are expected to provide shade, support local biodiversity and help maintain a stable local climate. The plantation design includes tall trees for shade and shrubs for better visibility and safety along roads. The project also involves local communities. Residents are expected to take part in planting, training and maintenance work, which officials say will create employment and help ensure the plants survive in the long run.v
