
In her inaugural statements as the newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) of the state, Idashisha Nongrang emphasized leveraging her perspective as a woman to bolster safety measures and enhance police accessibility for all citizens. Addressing reporters on Monday, Nongrang underscored the imperative need for heightened police accessibility to the public. “There is ample room for improvement in terms of the accessibility of the police force to the public,” she remarked, highlighting her commitment to fostering a safer environment for all.
Responding to queries regarding the alarming rise in crimes against women despite efforts, the DGP assured a proactive approach towards addressing underlying issues. She noted positive strides in curbing crime rates in certain districts, citing past successes in areas like East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills. However, Nongrang acknowledged the need for sustained efforts, particularly in combating crimes against women, including POCSO cases. Commenting on the pressing issue of drug menace, Nongrang expressed concern over its escalating presence, particularly in Shillong, which has transitioned from a transit point to a consumption hub. Despite significant seizures, she lamented the challenges in dismantling the supply chain effectively.
Highlighting systemic challenges, Nongrang acknowledged lapses in police action and judicial proceedings, resulting in inadequate deterrence against offenders. She called for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders in tackling the drug menace, emphasizing the need for tangible actions beyond mere discussions.Shifting focus to illegal coal mining and transportation, Nongrang acknowledged the multifaceted nature of the issue, influenced by livelihood concerns and regulatory complexities.
