NEHUSU, KSU members apprise governor on university administrative crisis

Members of the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit on Monday met Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar to apprise him of what they described as a serious governance and administrative crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, and sought his immediate intervention to restore lawful and effective functioning of the institution.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, NEHUSU general secretary Martin Warjri said the student bodies placed four major issues before the Governor. These include the removal of Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla from the post of Vice-Chancellor, the appointment of an Acting Vice-Chancellor strictly in accordance with NEHU Statutes, early disclosure and action on the Inquiry Committee report, and urgent measures to address the severe financial constraints facing the University.

Warjri said that at present there is no functional Vice-Chancellor at the NEHU headquarters in Shillong. He further stated that the Pro Vice-Chancellor tendered his resignation on December 15, 2025, and since then the University has been functioning without any academic or administrative head, resulting in what he termed a “complete vacuum in institutional leadership.” The student bodies drew the Governor’s attention to provisions under Statute 2(A)(5) of the North-Eastern Hill University Statutes, which lay down the mechanism for discharge of the Vice-Chancellor’s duties in the event of absence or vacancy.
