The North Eastern Council (NEC) has released funds for several development projects in Meghalaya as part of its continued efforts to strengthen infrastructure, education, healthcare, and connectivity across the Northeast region. According to official information, the NEC released more than ₹5.69 crore for different projects in Meghalaya during January 2026, while a larger allocation was also made for development works across the entire Northeast.
Officials said the funds for Meghalaya will support a number of important initiatives, including the construction of school buildings, improvement of healthcare facilities, and development of cultural infrastructure. Among the projects receiving financial support is the construction of a new school building at RKM School located in Nongjngi Nartiang. Financial assistance has also been provided for the construction of another school building at the Ramakrishna Mission School in Sohra, which is expected to improve educational infrastructure in the region.
Healthcare services will also receive a boost through NEC funding. A portion of the released amount will be used to support the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital, which is expected to strengthen diagnostic facilities and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the district for advanced medical tests. In addition, funds have been allocated for the development of the Williamson Sangma State Museum in Shillong, a project aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural and historical heritage of Meghalaya.
Road connectivity is another key area of focus. Under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS–Roads), the NEC has released around ₹3.91 crore to support important road infrastructure works. One of the major projects includes the construction of a road connecting Shillong city to Umroi Airport. The proposed road is expected to benefit around 7,287 residents living in about ten villages in the area and improve transport facilities for both local residents and visitors.
Out of this total amount, more than ₹32.59 crore was disbursed to central, regional, and other agencies, including educational institutions and cultural organisations. These funds will support projects related to education, tourism, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and scientific research across different states of the region.
