Nature Trail at Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary Inspires Students on Forest Conservation

Students from Rongdoi High School, Jorhat, explored the rich biodiversity of Assam’s Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary during an immersive nature trail aimed at promoting environmental awareness and conservation ethics. Organised under Aaranyak’s flagship initiative Nature’s Wonderland. A Journey of Curiosity the programme was held on January 16 in collaboration with the Assam Forest Department.

The students were thrilled to spot a family of five hoolock gibbons India’s only ape species along with capped langurs, a Malayan giant squirrel, and a diverse range of butterflies and spiders. Experts from Aaranyak guided participants through the forest, offering insights into primate behaviour, forest ecology, and the importance of protected areas.
Research Fellow Akshay Kumar Upadhyaya explained the unique social structure of hoolock gibbons, while forest staff Dhruba Chetia introduced students to forest signs, native tree species, and wildlife movement patterns. An interactive session highlighted the role of insects and lichens as indicators of ecosystem health.
The programme fostered curiosity and hands-on learning, leaving students inspired to value and protect Assam’s fragile forest ecosystems.
