NAD Raises Alarm Over Rising Tensions in Garo Hills, Seeks Probe

The Nangrimingin A·chik Dol (NAD) has expressed significant concerns over escalating tensions in the Garo Hills, citing provocations, illegal infiltration, and injustices faced by indigenous communities. The organization has made several demands to the government, including a comprehensive investigation into illegal infiltration, particularly regarding the recovery of ammunition and camouflage items from a mosque in Williamnagar, action against illegal settlers on tribal land, and enhanced border security to prevent further infiltrations.

NAD spokesperson Francis Marak acknowledged community support for their protests but noted cooperation issues that have strained relations, especially between Garos and Muslims. He raised doubts regarding police claims about the origin of the recovered materials, advocating for an impartial investigation to uncover the truth. Marak characterized the protests related to illegal immigration and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) as generally peaceful, attributing public unrest to provocations by suspected illegal immigrants. He welcomed the government’s decision to enforce Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates for elections but emphasized that this should protect Garo rights, as the ST category encompasses various groups nationwide. The organization also condemned the harassment of NGO leaders promoting indigenous rights, asserting that these advocates should not face persecution.

Clarifying their stance, Marak stated that the movement does not target any religious community but focuses on illegal infiltration, which has purportedly altered the Garo Hills’ demographic landscape. The NAD reiterated its commitment to peace and warned that ongoing provocations without government response could aggravate tensions. They urged both state and central governments to act decisively to ensure justice and protect indigenous community rights.
