MHRC orders probe into Ichamati deaths amid CAA protest

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to furnish a comprehensive report within 15 days concerning the purported killing of two laborers amidst a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Ichamati on March 27.

The directive from the commission ensued following an online grievance lodged by Shreshta, a resident of Madurai, alleging that the deceased, identified as Insan Sing and Sujit Dutta, hailed from non-indigenous backgrounds and were fatally assaulted by perpetrators exploiting the situation during the peaceful anti-CAA demonstration.

As per the complainant’s assertions, the protest escalated into violence, culminating in the tragic incident. The MHRC has acknowledged the gravity of the accusations and has solicited a comprehensive dossier from the state’s top law enforcement officer elucidating the circumstances surrounding the demise of the two laborers.
