Mendipathar College appointment row: Educators deny involvement, activist clarifies error

Two educators named in a recent complaint regarding alleged irregularities in faculty appointments at Mendipathar College have strongly denied any involvement, stating that their names were included without their consent or prior knowledge. The complaint was submitted by social activist Cherian Momin, adviser to the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (COMSO), to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Cheanchi Marak and Miss Sengatchi Marak, who were temporarily appointed under the People’s College Scheme at Mendipathar College, issued a joint statement distancing themselves from the allegations raised by Momin. “We were appointed temporarily and as substitutes in accordance with the Governing Body’s decisions, and we were fully aware of the terms and nature of our roles,” the statement clarified. “At no point did we raise objections or contest our appointments, as was wrongly suggested.”

The educators expressed shock that their names were included in the memorandum to the Chief Minister, describing the move as “a serious misrepresentation.” They emphasized that they did not authorize or endorse any statements made on their behalf and requested that any references implying their support for the complaint be disregarded as inaccurate.

Following the educators’ rebuttal and feedback from various quarters, social activist Cherian Momin has issued a formal clarification. Acknowledging the mistake, Momin admitted that the inclusion of the two names was due to a clerical error and did not reflect any verified documentation at the time of submission. “The reference to the two individuals was unintentional and not reflective of any verified documentation at the time of submission,” Momin stated.

He also reaffirmed that the aim of his representation to the Chief Minister was not to question any individual’s merit or integrity, but to bring attention to broader issues concerning transparency and procedural fairness in the recruitment process at Mendipathar College. “The communication was submitted in good faith to highlight systemic concerns and advocate for institutional accountability,” Momin added.
