
Meghalaya has brought laurels to the state in the field of Muay Thai after the Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya secured a total of 55 medals and finished second overall at the 7th UMMAI National Senior Muay Thai Championship 2026, held in Hyderabad, Telangana. The championship was organised by the Telangana Amateur Muay Thai Association, with 29 state teams from across India participating in the national level competition.
The Meghalaya Muay Thai team was led by Coach Angelus Sun and during the championship the state won 27 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals, bringing the total medal tally to 55 and earning Meghalaya the second position in the overall standings. Following their return, the Meghalaya Muay Thai team was accorded a warm felicitation by Saiden, Nongkyndang area, in honour of the team and Ujal R. Marak, who represented Meghalaya in the championship which was held at the Indoor Stadium of Saiden village.
Speaking on the occasion, Angelus Sun expressed immense happiness over the team’s achievement, particularly praising the dedication and hard work of both the male and female Muay Thai athletes who performed exceptionally well and brought pride to the state. He further stated that despite facing several challenges and limitations, the players did not lose morale, instead they continued to train with determination and perseverance, which ultimately helped Meghalaya secure the second position at the national championship. Adding to the pride and inspiration for the team, Elizabeth Marten, a female athlete from Meghalaya, was also awarded the Best Fighter title at the championship.
