Meghalaya’s first state-run university opens PG admissions, expands higher education access

Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), Meghalaya’s first fully state-run university, has officially opened its postgraduate admissions for the academic year 2025–26. This marks a major step forward for the state’s higher education sector, particularly in improving access and inclusivity for students across remote and underserved areas.

Announcing the development, Registrar A. Ch. Marak confirmed that CWSSU is offering a broad array of postgraduate programmes across its two campuses—Tura and Shillong. The Tura campus, which serves as the university’s permanent location, will offer PG courses in Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Science, Garo, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. Meanwhile, the Shillong campus will host courses in Commerce, English, Khasi, and Social Work—programmes that are also available at Tura.

Established through an Act of the Meghalaya Government in 2011, CWSSU has rapidly evolved into a vital academic institution. Its permanent campus, constructed at a cost of ₹16.96 crore under Special Plan Assistance, was completed in December 2022. Spread over 90 acres, it includes academic buildings, hostels, and administrative infrastructure, aligning with the state’s vision for educational self-sufficiency.

CWSSU gained formal recognition under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, and was empowered to confer degrees in December 2024. Academic operations began earlier this year at the Tura campus, while the Shillong campus is expected to become fully operational soon.

A key highlight of the admission process is that candidates are not required to appear for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which is mandatory for central universities like NEHU and its affiliated colleges under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This exemption is seen as a relief by many students, particularly those from rural areas with limited access to national-level entrance test facilities.

Additionally, 11 colleges across Meghalaya have received affiliation with CWSSU and will also admit students to postgraduate programmes without CUET requirements. Admission for the upcoming session will remain open for two to three weeks, with detailed guidelines and application forms available on the university’s official website.
