Meghalaya to form committee on Tura Winter Capital proposal

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced the formation of a committee to examine the long-standing demand to establish Tura as a Winter Capital. The decision was made during an Assembly debate on March 6, following a resolution moved by Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma.

The committee will include representatives from political parties, stakeholders, civil society members, and community leaders to conduct consultations on the proposal. The plan envisions temporarily shifting the executive wing, including ministers and the chief secretary, to Tura for part of the year, along with holding some Assembly sessions there.

Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged the emotional significance of the issue, particularly for the Garo community. He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the “Cabinet on the Move” programme and the Rs 170 crore Integrated Administrative Complex in Tura as steps towards decentralizing governance.
