Meghalaya to enforce driver ID display in commercial vehicles for safer travel

The Meghalaya government has announced that all commercial vehicles operating within the state will soon be required to display key driver identification details, including names, license numbers, contact information, and addresses. The decision aims to create a safer and more transparent travel environment for both locals and tourists. The directive was confirmed by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday, following a high-level meeting held at the state Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, and attended by senior officials from the transport and tourism departments.

“This is a simple but effective measure. It empowers passengers and discourages unlawful behaviour,” said Lyngdoh, underscoring the importance of visible driver credentials in deterring criminal activity and instilling public trust in the commercial transport system. Under the new rule, all vehicles operating with a commercial permit—such as taxis, auto-rickshaws, tourist vehicles, and buses—will be mandated to clearly display the driver’s information inside the vehicle. However, private vehicles, government-owned cars, and vehicles belonging to public sector undertakings will be exempt from this regulation.

Authorities believe that such visible identification will not only enable passengers to feel more secure but also act as a deterrent against potential misconduct, including overcharging, harassment, and unsafe driving practices.“The objective is to instil a sense of safety among travellers and possibly reduce criminal intention, if any, on the part of the drivers of commercial vehicles,” Lyngdoh said.
