The Government of Meghalaya is intensifying its preparations for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027, with focus on comprehensive team preparation activities throughout the State. In alignment with the Chief Minister’s objective of establishing Meghalaya as a leading sporting hub, the State is committing significant investments toward sports infrastructure, athlete development, and youth engagement. As part of its preparatory strategy, Rs 40 crore has been allocated in Phase I to 27 State Sports Associations, aimed at enhancing team readiness and athlete development across various sports disciplines. This initiative operates under a trust-based model, granting associations operational autonomy that acknowledges their expertise and understanding of sport-specific needs. Consequently, the associations have gained the capacity to independently acquire sports equipment, hire coaches and support staff, and conduct specific training camps. Currently, approximately 2,000 athletes are engaged in structured training, benefitting from improved facilities, newly appointed coaches, and better access to sports gear, all with the goal of ensuring strong performances at the National Games. Furthermore, the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs has praised the Archery Association’s president and the head coach of the Compound Division for their success in achieving two Gold Medals at the Khelo India Tribal Games. Meghalaya has also secured the 12th position in the overall medal tally of the First Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, achieving two gold and six bronze medals.
