Meghalaya Security Forces Deny Bangladesh Allegation Over Entry of Hadi’s Killers

Security agencies in Meghalaya have refuted statements made by the Bangladesh Police, which claimed that the killers of Sharif Osman Hadi, the leader of Inquilab Moncho, had escaped from Bangladesh and entered Meghalaya. Inspector General O.P. Opadhyay of the Border Security Force (BSF) stated that there is no evidence of illegal cross-border movement, calling the claims “unfounded and misleading.” He emphasized that the BSF has not detected or received reports of such incidents.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in the head on December 12 during an electoral campaign in Dhaka and was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for treatment, where he died from his injuries on December 18. In a related development, a senior officer from Dhaka Metropolitan Police suggested that two suspects in Hadi’s murder had crossed into Meghalaya through the Haluaghat border with aid from local associates. However, a Meghalaya police official pointed out that there is “no input or intelligence” supporting these claims regarding the suspects’ presence in the Garo Hills area, stating that local police units have not observed any such movements and are coordinating with central agencies.

The BSF has ensured that personnel deployed along the international border remain in a heightened state of alert to prevent any incidents, particularly given the current unrest in Bangladesh. They reiterated that the border is under continuous surveillance and that any attempts at infiltration would be swiftly addressed.
