Meghalaya: Restrictions Eased in West Garo Hills After Two-Week Curfew

In a significant sign of returning stability, the district administration of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya has officially lifted the night curfew across the region. The decision follows a comprehensive review of the prevailing law and order situation, with officials observing that normalcy has successfully been restored to the district. The curfew had been in place since March 19, originally imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. These measures were initially deemed necessary by the administration to address rising concerns over regional law and order and to safeguard the public. After nearly two weeks of monitoring, authorities are now confident that the immediate threat to public peace has subsided. While the movement restrictions have been removed, the district administration is not letting its guard down entirely. Officials have issued a strong appeal to all residents, urging the community to continue prioritizing peace, public order, and communal harmony. The administration has made it clear that while the curfew is gone, the responsibility to maintain a tranquil environment remains with every citizen. The lifting of the order comes with a stern warning: any individual or group found engaging in acts likely to disturb public tranquility will face strict legal consequences. Law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert and directed to remain vigilant. Their mandate is to take prompt, decisive measures against any potential breach of peace to ensure that the hard-won order in the district is not compromised. As West Garo Hills transitions back to its regular schedule, the administration hopes that the spirit of cooperation among residents will ensure a lasting period of stability for the region.
