Meghalaya Police to launch crackdown on traffic indiscipline in East Khasi Hills

The East Khasi Hills Police has launched a crackdown on traffic indiscipline, issuing a strict advisory to streamline vehicle flow and improve road safety in the state capital. The department has declared a zero-tolerance policy for illegal parking on designated no-parking stretches. Violators will be penalised under the Motor Vehicles Act, with first-time offenders fined Rs 500.

Subsequent offences will attract penalties between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000, and vehicles may be towed at the owner’s expense. Local and tourist taxis have also been directed to park only at authorised stands. Stressing on lane discipline, the advisory prohibits unsafe overtaking and reckless driving, particularly at junctions and narrow roads. Two-wheeler riders have been warned against zig-zagging and speeding; helmet violations will carry a Rs 1,000 fine, while dangerous driving can attract penalties up to Rs 10,000.

Specific regulations have been set for load-carrying vehicles; those transporting hay or straw must be properly covered and secured or face a Rs 2,000 fine. Drunk driving remains a priority for the police. Any driver found with a blood alcohol level exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml will face a Rs 10,000 fine, a potential six-month prison sentence, or both. “The public, including transport operators and commuters, are requested to cooperate with the traffic police to ensure safe and smooth movement,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said.
