Meghalaya Police collect Rs 8 lakh in fines during overnight traffic crackdown in Ri Bhoi

The Meghalaya Police collected nearly ₹8 lakh in fines during a night-long crackdown across Ri Bhoi district. The operation, which ran from 7 p.m. until the early hours of Wednesday morning, aimed to enforce traffic discipline and curb violations that have become increasingly common on state highways and local roads. According to police officials, around 2,500 vehicles were checked, and nearly 200 motorists were penalised for a range of offences, including not wearing helmets or seatbelts, driving without valid documents, using the wrong lane, overspeeding, drunk driving, and illegal vehicle modifications. The drive was among the most extensive traffic enforcement operations in the district this year.

The Ri Bhoi Police shared details of the operation on social media, underlining their commitment to ensuring road safety. In their Facebook post, the department encouraged citizens to actively support enforcement measures through a community reporting system. Residents can now send photos or videos of traffic violations via WhatsApp to 6909300160, creating what officials call a “public surveillance network” to aid police monitoring.

“Be our eyes and ears, and we will be much more effective,” the police said, thanking volunteers and media representatives who participated in the overnight operation. The initiative, they added, is part of an ongoing effort to instil a culture of compliance and accountability among motorists.
