Meghalaya honours its Everest conqueror with a state award and cash prize

In a government ceremony, Rifiness Warjri, 20, who just climbed Mount Everest, was given state recognition and a cash prize of Rs 6 lakh, underscoring Meghalaya’s dedication to honoring exceptional athletic accomplishments. In honor of the child mountaineer’s incredible achievement of reaching the top of the world’s highest peak, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma gave her Rs 5 lakh, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs gave her an extra Rs 1 lakh.

The Chief Minister asked Warjri, in an open conversation at the State Convention Centre, if she ever thought about quitting up during her difficult ascent. The felicitation ceremony, which was a part of a larger event focused on sports development in the state, served as an inspiration to other young athletes from Meghalaya for Warjri’s achievement. For adventure sports in the northeastern state, her successful Everest trek marks a major turning point, proving that Meghalayan athletes can compete and perform well on the international scene in a variety of sports.

The state administration has emphasized its dedication to helping athletes in all sports, from traditional games to adventure sports and climbing, as Meghalaya gets ready to host the 39th National Games in 2027. As the state continues to make significant investments in fostering talent across a variety of athletic disciplines and expanding its sporting ecosystem, Warjri’s accomplishment joins the increasing list of Meghalaya’s sporting achievements.
