Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 11 inaugurated a series of landmark projects worth Rs 1,087.81 crore, spanning infrastructure, tourism, sports, women’s welfare and digital empowerment in Meghalaya. The projects were unveiled at a special event held at LARITI – International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture in Shillong.
Calling it a “transformational moment” for the state, Sitharaman lauded Meghalaya for its efficient use of central funds, noting that the state has fully utilised its Rs 5,400 crore allocation under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. “While some states struggle to use their share, Meghalaya has shown how to convert funding into tangible progress,” she said.
A major highlight was the announcement of the Rs 732 crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium, a modern complex that includes a residential football academy, developed in collaboration with NorthEast United FC. The project is set to reinforce Meghalaya’s identity as India’s football capital, offering high-quality facilities for youth and aspiring athletes.
Tourism infrastructure also received a significant push. The Rs 120.81 crore redevelopment of Umiam Lake aims to transform the iconic site into a world-class eco-tourism destination, expected to attract over 1.27 lakh visitors annually and create nearly 4,000 jobs in the region.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the state’s rapid economic growth, noting that Meghalaya is close to becoming a $6 billion economy with a growth rate nearing 15%, significantly above the national average. “We aim to be among India’s top 10 states by 2032 and achieve a $10 billion economy,” he said.
