Meghalaya Cops Arrest 4 Bangladeshi Nationals After Illegal Entry Bid

Meghalaya police arrested four Bangladeshi nationals for unlawfully entering India via the Dawki sector in West Jaintia Hills district on the intervening night of December 17-18, reports said. The arrests took place during a routine naka checking at Amlarem market junction around 12:30 am, after a team of police personnel stopped a speeding tourist vehicle (bearing registration number ML-04 D 9309) approaching from Dawki. The driver of the vehicle attempted to give the policemen a slip. However, the police team chased the vehicle before intercepting them at Amsarin. It was revealed after verification that four undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were inside the vehicle that was on its way to Assam.

The vehicle was seized while the driver, Chemphang Rasmut (43) from Shkentalang village, was arrested.
A case has been registered under the Foreigners Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused have been produced in court. In another shocking incident, alleged miscreants from Bangladesh reportedly crossed into Indian territory and robbed residents of Umniuh Tmar village at Pynursla in Meghalaya, near the India-Bangladesh border, on Thursday. According to reports, three mobile phones, a pair of earphones, and a tablet were robbed from the victims.

However, questions about security lapses and surveillance loopholes remain after the incident which took place in a fenced and BSF-guarded border zone, approximately one kilometre inside Indian territory. According to police, at least four miscreants had blocked the road with tree branches and stones, prompting a vehicle carrying five occupants—one male driver and four women passengers—to stop. The robbers thereafter looted the victims, who did not resist out of fear. Pynursla police responded promptly after being informed, confirming the robbery and initiating an investigation
