Meghalaya CM Says Synod College Goes Beyond Academics to Shape Society

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the Closing Ceremony of College Week 2026 and the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Synod College Shillong. In his address, he highlighted the college’s legacy, which has positively impacted numerous lives and instilled strong Christian values in its students. He emphasized the importance of these values in shaping responsible citizens who contribute to society. The Chief Minister acknowledged notable alumni, including the late J. D. Rymbai, whose successes exemplify the college’s influence beyond academics.

Sangma reflected on his long-lasting personal connection with the college, having participated in its Golden Jubilee celebrations and expressed the significance of education as a crucial investment for societal improvement. He underscored ongoing educational reforms based on the Education Reforms Commission’s recommendations and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting education in Meghalaya, which allocates approximately Rs 1,200 crore annually to around 4,500 institutions. He noted that nearly Rs 120 crore is designated for teachers’ salaries under deficit grants, benefiting institutions like Synod College.

Addressing the youth, Sangma pointed out the demographic advantage of Meghalaya, with nearly 50% of its population under 20 years old, describing it as both an opportunity and a challenge. He urged students to tackle issues such as drug abuse and HIV by working collaboratively with their communities. Encouraging entrepreneurship, he highlighted the disparity between job opportunities and the number of young people entering the workforce annually, advocating for educational institutions to enhance skill development and innovation.

Concluding his address, he reminded students of the importance of values and character, stating that while education and success are vital, being a good human being is paramount. The celebration included a performance by the College Choir and student cultural dance, showcasing the region’s rich traditions. The ceremony concluded with the announcement of the winners of the College Week competitions.
