Meghalaya CM opens the newly renovated Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum

The recently refurbished Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum, housed inside the grounds of the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, was officially opened by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The occasion represents an important turning point in the state’s initiatives to use cutting-edge methods and contemporary technologies to protect and promote its rich cultural legacy. Sangma stated that the state’s Education Department will shortly issue orders mandating that all pupils visit the museum as part of this vision.

By incorporating cultural education into their academic path, the initiative seeks to promote cultural awareness and pride in young learners. The chief minister announced intentions to build comparable museums in several districts, starting with Tura, in order to increase cultural access throughout the state. Designs for these future projects are already being considered, he said. Sangma further emphasized how the Chief Minister’s Research Grant (CMRG) is facilitating a great deal of cultural study.

The documentation of 71 traditional Garo games, the uncovering of archaeological tourism potential in the Garo Hills, and AI-powered translation and phonetic tools for indigenous languages are noteworthy developments under the funding. Stone monoliths that may have been created as early as 1200 BC are among these finds. The chief minister stressed the value of local entrepreneurship while talking about Meghalaya’s efforts to develop a creative economy. The PRIME Program supports local business owners and artists in producing high-quality crafts and souvenirs that honor the state’s history.
