Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma meets PM Modi, seek financial support

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 15 to discuss and seek financial support amounting to Rs 1000 crore for the ambitious New Shillong City project. This project aims to significantly transform and alleviate congestion in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

The state government plans to utilize 25 acres of land for various developmental initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s aesthetics, promoting cultural diversity, and addressing traffic issues. Key components of the project include the creation of new walkways, a green park, museums, and other infrastructural developments. This initiative is also expected to bolster educational and tourism sectors in the Northeast region.Additionally, the iconic Police Bazar area in Shillong is slated for a comprehensive makeover, featuring a new business and tourism center. This Rs 216 crore project, part of the Shillong Smart City initiative, aims to revamp the area within a year, promising a modernized experience for locals and visitors alike.

Earlier initiatives under the Shillong Smart City initiative include the foundation laying for three parking projects providing 465 parking spaces at a cost of Rs 90 crore, and a Rs 15 crore renovation project for the historic Iewduh Market, aimed at preserving its traditional charm while modernizing facilities. Another significant development includes the enhancement of a 1.2 km stretch opposite Ward’s Lake, encompassing a plaza, shops, vending zones, parking facilities, and a restaurant, aimed at further improving the city’s appeal and infrastructure.
