Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma Hands Appointment Letters to 3,000 Police Recruits

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma distributed appointment letters to nearly 3,000 newly recruited personnel of the Meghalaya Police, calling the recruitment exercise an important step toward strengthening law enforcement and governance in the state.

Speaking at a programme held in Tura, the Chief Minister described the event as a historic and memorable moment. He said it was one of the largest recruitment drives carried out by the state government and added that the selection process was conducted in a transparent and merit-based manner.

According to Sangma, the recruitment drive saw a huge response from job seekers across Meghalaya. More than 1.7 lakh candidates applied for different posts in the police department. After several stages of selection and verification, close to 3,000 candidates were chosen and given their appointment letters. He said the day marked a significant milestone for the police department and for the young recruits who had worked hard to secure their positions.

Officials said the recruitment process covers a total of 2,968 vacancies in different technical and service-related roles within the police force. The largest number of posts filled were for 1,494 Armed Branch Constables and related positions. Another 720 posts were filled for Unarmed Branch Constables. In addition, 205 candidates were selected as Multipurpose Response Operators and 195 as firemen.

The recruitment also includes several specialised roles such as UBSI, Driver Fireman, Driver Constable, operator and mechanic positions. Officials said these appointments are expected to strengthen operational capacity in different wings of the police department.

During his address, Sangma underlined the importance of maintaining peace and order in society. He said a strong and disciplined police force plays a key role in ensuring safety and stability. “Development cannot survive without law and order. Without peace and stability, nothing can move forward,” he said while urging the recruits to perform their duties with honesty, discipline and fairness.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s focus on employment generation. He said the state government will soon complete eight years in office and during this period nearly 11,000 appointments and recruitments have been made in different sectors.
