Meghalaya cabinet clears bill to upgrade IIPH Shillong into State University

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026, clearing the way for the upgradation of the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong into a State University. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held on February 24. With this approval, the proposed legislation will now move forward for further formalities as required under the law. Once granted university status, IIPH Shillong will be able to award degrees independently to students and scholars in the field of public health. At present, institutions without university status depend on affiliations or partnerships for awarding degrees. The new status will give the institute academic independence and administrative flexibility.

Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening higher education in Meghalaya, particularly in the field of public health. The state government believes that upgrading the institute will improve teaching standards, research output, and professional training in health-related disciplines. Public health has become an important area of focus in recent years, especially after the challenges posed by pandemics and emerging diseases. The government feels that a dedicated State University in this sector will help build trained manpower and support better health planning in the region.

The decision is also being seen as significant for the entire Northeast. With university status, IIPH Shillong is expected to expand its academic programmes, promote advanced research, and work closely with government departments and health agencies. Once formally established as a State University, the institution is expected to play a larger role in strengthening public health systems not only in Meghalaya but across the Northeast.
