Meghalaya BJP to Go Solo in Shillong Parliamentary By-Election

In a shift from its previous support for a consensus candidate within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), the Meghalaya BJP has opted to independently contest the Shillong Parliamentary by-election, pending approval from its central leadership. State BJP president Rikman G. Momin announced the party’s intent to enter the election solo, citing a desire to bolster its voter base. Currently, six to seven candidates have shown interest in securing the party ticket, with the official process anticipated to start after the Election Commission issues its notification. This by-election is required due to the passing of the sitting MP, Ricky A.J. Syngkon. Momin emphasized the party’s decision to refrain from endorsing any MDA candidate this time, highlighting ongoing discussions despite the central leadership’s engagement with elections in other regions. Prominent contenders include BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang and former state president Ernest Mawrie, alongside additional leaders from the Jaintia Hills. Regarding the postponed GHADC elections, Momin mentioned that preparatory work is in progress, ensuring the party’s readiness once elections are called.
