Meghalaya BJP Calls for Strict Action Against Attempts to Disrupt Christmas Celebrations

The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has called for strong and immediate action against anyone trying to disturb Christmas celebrations in the country. The statement was made on December 26 after reports emerged about incidents in some places where attempts were allegedly made to disrupt the festive season. State BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said that Christmas is a festival that stands for peace, love and unity. He noted that the festival is not only celebrated by Christians, but is also respected and enjoyed by people from many different communities across India. He said it was painful to see that a few people were trying to disturb this peaceful atmosphere. According to Kharkrang, such actions go against the basic values of Indian society, where people of many religions and cultures have always lived together.

He said that the BJP believes in equality among all religions and fully supports the constitutional right of every citizen to celebrate their festivals freely and without fear. He also pointed out that some political parties were trying to turn these incidents into political issues. Kharkrang said that in many cases, these were isolated acts carried out by petty criminals, but attempts were being made to present them as organised attacks for political gain. He warned that such behaviour could increase tension and misunderstanding among communities. The BJP spokesperson further said that the party has always respected all religions. He mentioned that the Prime Minister and senior BJP leaders have regularly taken part in Christmas services over the years, including in 2025, as a mark of goodwill and respect for the Christian community.

Kharkrang said the party stands with citizens across the country who want those responsible for disrupting Christmas celebrations to be punished under the strictest laws. He stressed that this is important to make sure that people can continue to celebrate their festivals peacefully. He also said that BJP leaders in Meghalaya are in touch with party members in states where such incidents have been reported, including Assam. According to him, the aim is to ensure that nobody involved in such acts is able to avoid responsibility.
