Meghalaya begins statewide shooting trials to scout talent for 2027 National Games in Shillong

With just under two years to go for the prestigious 39th National Games, the Shooting Association of Meghalaya has launched a state-wide selection drive to identify top shooting talent to represent the host state. The trials, aimed at building a competitive team, kicked off over the weekend in various districts and drew participation from a wide range of age groups and backgrounds.The 2027 National Games, which will be held in Shillong for the first time, mark a milestone for Meghalaya in the country’s sporting history. In preparation, the state is focusing on a transparent and performance-driven selection process to ensure the best athletes are given a platform to shine.

“This is a golden opportunity for Meghalaya not just to host but to excel on home soil,” said JF Kharshiing, President of the Shooting Association of Meghalaya. “We are committed to nurturing young and emerging talent through a strategic focus on training, infrastructure, and rigorous trials. Our goal is not just participation, but domination in the shooting events at the Games.”The shooting trials began on Saturday, with participants from Ri Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, and East Khasi Hills competing across various disciplines including 10m air rifle, 25m and 50m pistol, and 50m rifle prone events. The selection process continued on Sunday with athletes from West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills displaying their marksmanship.

Organisers noted that the trials showcased a diverse mix of talent, with participants ranging in age from 13 to 50 years, demonstrating that shooting is gaining traction across age groups in the state. “We were particularly impressed by the precision and discipline shown by young shooters. This bodes well for the future of shooting sports in Meghalaya,” an official from the association remarked.
