
Meghalaya registered its first medal wins at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, marking an important moment for the state in national-level sports. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma congratulated the athletes on March 27 and said their achievements show the growing strength of sports in Meghalaya.
Larityngkai Lawriniang won a bronze medal in the 53kg weightlifting category. She became the first athlete from Meghalaya to secure a medal at the event. The Chief Minister said her success reflects years of hard work and dedication. He also noted that she is part of the STAR Elite Pathway Programme, which supports promising sportspersons.
In a message, Sangma said, “Congratulations to Larityngkai Lawriniang for securing Meghalaya’s first medal in the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026. Great to see the fruition of her hard work.”
Another athlete, Verem G. Syiemlieh, also won a bronze medal. The Chief Minister described her achievement as another proud moment for the state. He said her performance makes her the first athlete from Meghalaya to win a medal in any National Game.
Sangma praised both players and their coaches for their efforts. He said their success shows that young athletes from Meghalaya are moving forward with confidence and discipline. He also encouraged more young people in the state to take up sports and aim for higher achievements in the future.
