Massive Floods Hit Bangladesh, Displacing Thousands

Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across northern Bangladesh, affecting over 300,000 people and submerging large areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, and Jamalpur districts. The rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers have destroyed homes, crops, and roads.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has warned that the situation may worsen if rains continue in upstream India and Nepal. Local authorities and the army have set up temporary shelters and are distributing food and medicine to the displaced.

Environmental experts attribute the increasing frequency of such floods to climate change and poor river management. They warn that without stronger flood-control infrastructure, the damage will worsen in coming years.

For readers in India’s northeast, especially West Bengal and Assam, the flooding could have regional effects as rivers connect both nations. The Indian government has already increased monitoring along border river basins.
