
A special court in East Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, has sentenced Sanjay Das to life imprisonment in a kidnapping-for-ransom case that has been under investigation for over a decade. The sentencing, presided over by Special Judge B. Khriam, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Das. The original case was reported in 2012 at Khliehriat Police Station, with charges filed under Section 364(A) of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses kidnapping for ransom. Following a comprehensive investigation led by Inspector L. Lyngkhoi, the charge sheet was submitted on July 28, 2014, culminating in a verdict delivered recently, officially announced on January 15, 2026, by the Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills.
In addition to Das’s conviction, the court adjudicated two other serious criminal cases on the same day. Ramesh Dkhar received a life sentence for murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, along with a fine of Rs 10,000. This case originated at Khliehriat Women Police Station in 2020, with the charge sheet filed on March 31, 2021, after being investigated by Women Police Inspector O. Tyngkan.
Moreover, Apurba Das was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, receiving a total of eight years of rigorous imprisonment. His sentence included five years under Section 10 of the POCSO Act (with a fine of Rs 10,000) and three years under Section 8 (with a fine of Rs 5,000). This case was registered in 2022 at Khliehriat Women Police Station and investigated by Sub-Inspector O. Nongtdu, with the charge sheet presented on February 15, 2023. All three convictions were formally communicated by the office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills district, Khliehriat, Meghalaya.
