Indigenous streaming service marks milestone with high engagement in khasi, garo, and pnar content

A major milestone for local digital entertainment has been reached by Hello Meghalaya, the first indigenous OTT platform in the northeastern state, which has accumulated 10 million content views in its first year of existence. The website celebrated its first anniversary on Friday, having registered nearly 200,000 members and received 380,000 downloads since its launch on July 11, 2024. The fact that users watch content for an average of four and a half hours shows that they are very interested in locally generated content. “Ka Chithi,” “Pynngop,” “Ka-Daw,” “9-Lad,” “Jingim,” and “Ahor” are among the six films that have surpassed the one million view mark; they all tell tales with roots in Meghalayan customs and culture.

The streaming service has established a distinct market niche by concentrating solely on regional language programming, such as Pnar, Garo, and Khasi. The website offers live programming, documentaries, music videos, vlogs, short films, and films made by local artists and filmmakers. In addition to providing entertainment, Hello Meghalaya serves as a center for talent development, hosting filmmaking exchange programs aimed at boosting local content producers’ technical proficiency. Given that large streaming services have historically concentrated on Hindi and English programming, the platform’s success indicates the growing demand for hyperlocal content in India’s digital entertainment environment.

The platform has given local filmmakers and content producers new sources of income, and several have reported greater possibilities and recognition as a result of their Hello Meghalaya releases. The anniversary milestone coincides with the growing popularity of regional over-the-top (OTT) platforms in India, as viewers look more and more for material that speaks to their local stories and cultural identities.
