Meghalaya has stepped up efforts to promote sports tourism by hosting a series of sailing events at Umiam Lake, drawing both national and international attention. Over a span of ten days, the scenic reservoir near Shillong turned into a busy sporting venue, hosting two major competitions — the Indian Sailing League (ISL) and the 4th North East Regatta.
More than 280 sailors took part in the events, including participants from countries like Russia, Korea, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Officials said the idea behind holding the events back-to-back was to highlight Umiam as a strong destination for water sports in India.
The Indian Sailing League, held for the first time, saw 182 sailors competing across different categories. Fourteen teams participated, and the total prize money crossed Rs 1.5 crore, making it one of the biggest sailing competitions in the country. The Bhopal Tritons team won the event, followed by Vizag Vikings, while Shillong Umiam Navigators secured a podium finish.
Soon after, the North East Regatta was held in association with the Yachting Association of India. The event had over 100 participants and also served as a selection platform for national-level competitions, including preparations for the Asian Games.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the events are part of a larger plan to develop Umiam into a year-round tourism hub. He said the government wants to show that Meghalaya is ready to host major events and is working towards building a strong tourism and sports ecosystem.
Officials said the focus is now on experience-based tourism, where visitors can stay longer and take part in activities. Facilities like the Orchid Water Sports Complex are being improved, and more accommodation and infrastructure are being planned.
The events were organised with support from groups like the Umiam Sailing Club and the United De Novo Association of Yachting. Authorities said strong planning and coordination helped in managing events of this scale.
Karambir Singh, president of the Yachting Association of India, praised the state’s efforts and said the level of support provided was impressive. He also noted that Umiam is quickly growing as a key sailing destination.
