The Meghalaya government has taken measures to ensure the comprehensive security of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar following threats from the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned militant group. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the Home portfolio, emphasized the government’s commitment to the safety of all citizens, particularly in life-threatening situations. He stated that the police department has implemented adequate security arrangements for Dhar.
In response to claims made by HNLC, which alleged that an IED blast was caused by Dhar’s refusal to pay extortion money, Tynsong clarified that there is no information verifying that Dhar has received any extortion letters. He pointed out that the HNLC previously asserted that Dhar had paid the requested extortion amount, but has since claimed that he has ceased these payments. Tynsong firmly asserted that the government will not permit extortion to persist in the state and noted that the allegations from HNLC regarding several MLAs from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills receiving extortion letters are unverified.
Additionally, Tynsong indicated that the government remains open to renewing peace negotiations with HNLC while also sending a warning that strict legal action will be taken against any individuals or groups involved in criminal activities that threaten peace and public order. In conjunction with these developments, two individuals identified as overground workers, Richard Suchen and Pynshaitbor Syih, have been arrested in relation to the IED blast.
