High-End Projects to Offer Tourists a Unique Experience in Meghalaya: CM

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced plans for high-end tourism infrastructure aimed at transforming the state into a significant cultural and experiential destination while boosting employment and the local economy. The highlight is the Monolith Towers, set to rise 123 meters in New Shillong’s Mawkhanu area, making them the country’s second tallest structure after the Statue of Unity. These towers will serve as a modern tourist hub, featuring elevators, restaurants, and a circular glass walkway for panoramic views.

Advanced lighting technology will enhance the visitor experience with nightly laser shows that narrate Meghalaya’s stories and culture. The Monolith Tower Complex, designed by INI Design Studio, spans approximately 213.8 acres, blending tourism, culture, and ecology while drawing inspiration from traditional Khasi and Jaintia monoliths, symbolizing ancestral heritage.

Officials reported that the complex will house five immersive galleries showcasing the state’s natural and cultural identity, covering themes such as rain, caves, living root bridges, tribal life, and flora and fauna. It will also feature a 72-meter sky bridge, elevated dining spaces, and visitor facilities. Sangma noted that the Monolith Towers are part of a larger initiative to alleviate congestion in Shillong and develop new tourism zones statewide. Additional upcoming projects include a Rs 51-crore skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok, the longest cantilever structure in India; a Rs 30-crore Tribal Heritage Experience Centre at Mandalgre; an eco-resort at Sakaladuma; and a Rain and Bamboo Museum at Mawsynram.
