Dormonath Ch. Sangma is set to become the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) following the resignation of former CEM Albinush R. Marak. Sources within the council indicated that Sangma has secured the support of a majority of the Members of District Council (MDCs) after 21 MDCs moved a motion of no confidence against the previous leadership.
Marak had stepped down from the post shortly before the special session of the council was convened to discuss the no-confidence motion against him. The development marks a significant political shift within the GHADC as members move forward to form a new executive committee under Sangma’s leadership. Officials said further procedures related to the formation of the new executive committee are expected to take place during the special session.
