District Administration Revamps Prevention Panel to Curb Underage Marriage in Meghalaya

In a significant move to strengthen social safeguards and protect the rights of minors, the East Jaintia Hills district administration has officially reconstituted its Committee for Prevention of Child Marriage. The revamped panel aims to create a more robust and unified framework by integrating government officials, community leaders, and civil society representatives into a singular mission to eliminate the practice of child marriage.

According to the official notification, the committee will be chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, who also serves as the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer. The District Child Protection Officer has been appointed as the Member Secretary to oversee the panel’s operational duties. This administrative restructuring is designed to streamline communication and ensure that interventions are swift and legally sound.

The committee’s strength lies in its diverse composition, drawing experts from essential government sectors including police, health, social welfare, and education. Beyond the administrative sphere, the panel includes public prosecutors and social workers, alongside influential community voices. Notably, representatives from traditional bodies such as Seinraij Tuber and Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong, as well as prominent church leaders, have been brought on board. This inclusive approach recognizes that long-term social change requires the active participation of grassroots and traditional institutions.

The committee has been tasked with a multifaceted mandate. A primary focus will be the intensification of awareness campaigns through workshops and training programs. These initiatives are aimed at educating the general public about the severe physical, psychological, and legal consequences of child marriage. By fostering a deeper understanding of these adverse effects, the administration hopes to shift societal mindsets from the ground up.

In addition to preventive education, the panel will maintain a vigilant monitoring system. Members are tasked with intervening in potential cases of underage marriage, gathering necessary evidence to support legal prosecution against offenders, and providing counseling to individuals to deter them from facilitating such illegal acts. Officials have emphasized that this move is intended to bridge the gap between state enforcement and community-led vigilance, creating a safer environment for every child in the district.
