Demand Raised for Cultural Centre at Khyndai Lad as HYC Makes Appeal

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has urged the Meghalaya government to establish a dedicated public cultural centre at Khyndai Lad in Shillong, aimed at preserving the area’s historic name, cultural identity, and legacy. HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem describes this initiative as “visionary and culturally rooted,” which would boost Shillong’s attractiveness as a cultural tourism destination and align with the philosophy of “Im Ka Kyrteng, Sah Ka Nam.” The proposed centre is envisioned as a cultural monument and community hub featuring an open performance area for local artists, outlets for traditional food and crafts, and installations underscoring Khyndai Lad’s historical significance. Synrem emphasizes that Khyndai Lad should be recognized as a significant cultural landmark, asserting that its name must be honored through meaningful public spaces that convey its story to both residents and visitors. The centre is expected to serve multiple roles, educating tourists on the heritage of Khyndai Lad while ensuring respect for its name. Additionally, a permanent performance venue would provide indigenous artists, including Khasi, a platform for music, dance, and traditions, thereby fostering cultural continuity. Synrem highlights the economic benefits from designated stalls for traditional goods that would promote local entrepreneurship, particularly among youth and women, while advocating for sustainable tourism and enhancing urban pride by transforming Khyndai Lad into a vibrant cultural monument rather than a crowded commercial area.
