Cyclone Remal devastates South West Khasi Hills; schools and homes severely damaged

Cyclone Remal unleashed widespread destruction across the South West Khasi Hills on May 28, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. The District Disaster Response Authority (DDMA) reported significant damage to 17 schools and numerous residences, affecting many residents. In Ranikor Block, 15 schools were heavily damaged in the villages of Arlad, Nongmalang Mawpyllun, Nongnah Khadphra, Nongbah Jynrin Chitogre, Nongmluh Phlangdiloin, Mawphansaw, and Borsora. The cyclone left many school buildings unusable, severely impacting the local education infrastructure.Similarly, in Mawkyrwat Block, two schools in the villages of Nonglang and Shaid Shaid sustained damage. The loss of these educational facilities poses a significant challenge to the local community, necessitating alternative arrangements for students and teachers. Beyond educational institutions, the cyclone’s devastation extended to residential areas. In Ranikor Block, five villages—Old Moilam, Lower Puksora, Panchering B, Munnai, and Mawhati—suffered extensive damage, with 28 houses destroyed, affecting 152 residents. Many families are now without shelter and essential supplies.

The Ranikor Community Health Centre, a vital medical facility in the area, also suffered considerable damage, with parts of the building destroyed. This has strained the community’s ability to respond to medical emergencies and provide adequate healthcare services.Mawkyrwat Block was similarly affected, with a landslide in the village of Pyndenlyngdoh destroying one house. This incident underscores the additional risks of landslides following severe weather events like Cyclone Remal.Local authorities are working tirelessly to assess the full extent of the damage and provide immediate assistance to those affected. Relief efforts are focused on providing temporary shelters, food, and medical aid to displaced families. The DDMA is coordinating with various government and non-governmental organizations to ensure a swift response.

Rebuilding damaged infrastructure, including schools and homes, will be a priority in the coming weeks. The community is rallying together to support those affected and begin the long process of recovery and reconstruction.
